Where can I go to take a course?
The fastest and easiest way to register for a National Driver Safety Institute course is through our retail course site - www.defensivedriveracademy.com. You may either navigate to that site or link from in this pages footer.
Where does your course content come from?
All content contained within NDSI courses is unique, internally developed and written or produced. We create content based on regulatory authority requirements, recognized driver safety standards, traffic accident statistics, research based causal factors, online educational delivery research and with a critical eye towards ensuring it is engaging for the student.
What type of content does the NDSI provide?
We develop defensive driver and driver improvement content that consists of text, images, graphs and charts, specialized graphics, live capture video, virtual reality software based video and audio. The NDSI embraces such a broad range of content types because we believe that it is required in order to maximize student engagement with our educational process.
Can I take an NDSI course at a local location?
The NDSI does not maintain nor operate via traditional brick and mortal physical locations. That said, it may be possible that we are providing licensed content or private label courses through a partner or consulting client. To find out an NDSI course is available through a local client please send us an email with your address and will will follow up directly with you.

Defensive Driver Academy

Defensive Driver Academy is the NDSI's retail offered, consumer direct online defensive driver and driver improvement course. This is the most comprehensive, online optimized and modern driving challenges focused course available on the market today. See below for common questions.
Who should take the Defensive Driver Academy Course?
Anyone interested in becoming a safer driver, better equipped with education and skills aimed at becoming a more aware and prepared driver ready to face todays' driving challenges. Also, anyone seeking to reduce points on their driver’s license, to meet the requirements of their traffic court or to gain a defensive driver discount on their automobile insurance. (Please note – as with any defensive driver course, consult with your local authorities or your own insurance company to confirm eligibility. Defensive Driver Academy can provide any course documentation and credentials requested by any regulating authority or insurance company to aid in course acceptance)
Why should I want to take a defensive driving course?
To aid in gaining improved defensive driving skills along with a greater understanding of and preparedness for the challenges associated with modern driving. Also anyone seeking to reduce driver’s license points, to meet the requirements of a traffic court or to gain a valuable discount on their automobile insurance.
How old do I have to be and how much does it cost?
Defensive Driver Academy is open to drivers of all ages! The complete online course costs $29.95, payable via credit/debit card or paypal. There is no additional fee or delay associated with delivery of your certificate of completion!
How long will it take to complete the course?
The Defensive Driver Academy course exceeds all regulatory requirements to comply as either a “6-hour” or “8-hour” course. How fast the course may actually be completed is dependent upon each students individual pace and grasp of the course material. Many students will finish faster and some may require more time. There is no time limit on completing the course and students may proceed at their own pace.
What kind of exam or test is required?
The Defensive Driver Academy course consists of 5 individual sessions and each session is broken down into 5 or 6 different sections. Each session has its own 10 question multiple choice quiz. A passing grade of 70% must be achieved for each quiz before the student may progress to the next session. After all 5 sessions have been completed, the student must pass a 20 question final exam.
Do I have to complete the course in a single sitting?
Absolutely not! The Defensive Driver Academy course may be completed at your own pace and in as many different sessions as is needed. Your progress through the course is automatically saved and each time a student returns the course is picked up where previously left off.
