Defensive Driver Academy – National Driver Safety Institute

Defensive Driver Academy

Project Information

The first major project undertaken by the NDSI was the development of our own consumer focused defensive driver and driver improvement course branded and marketed as Defensive Driver Academy. This project entailed the creation of all course materials including written, graphics, charts/graphs, images and video content. The course objective was simple yet challenging: make available to anyone seeking to improve their driving skills the absolute best online driver improvement educational experience available anywhere.
Driven by a direct need for true top quality online driver improvement education for insurance agency owners seeking to assist their customers with becoming safer drivers, an in depth analysis of available courses and costs made it clear that a new, better solution was warranted. Existing courses lacked content that was both optimized for online educational excellence and focused toward modern driving challenges. Issues also presented relative to data integrity and guarantees regarding insurance agent referred course students not having competitive insurance services marketed directly to them due to the course provider selling student data. Traditional course cost structures also represented a significant barrier to entry for many individuals.

Challenge & Solution

The primary challenge was to create course content that without question accomplishes the goal of making individuals who complete the course safer on today's roads. The course was required too exceed all regulatory requirements from a broad range of State authorities. It had to clearly exceed the requirements of all the major insurance companies for defensive driver discount purposes. Students who registered for the new course had to be actively engaged such that they "Bought-In" to both the real need for improvement and that they had chosen an educational outlet that would make a significant difference in their road safety. All of these goals had to be accomplished such that the final course could be distributed through multiple channels at a cost structure that did not impede broad student access.
Comprehensive Driver Improvement Needs Analysis
Research entailed evaluating 20+ state regulatory agencies for content requirements and available materials. All of the major insurance companies were researched in order to determine how they evaluated defensive driver and driver improvement course content materials and what their course approval processes entailed. Insurance agency owners were engaged to build a better understanding of the challenges they faced when attempting to assist their clients with improving driver safety and gaining a valuable discount. Last, detailed feedback was obtained from a large number of individuals immediately after having completed an existing course from 8 different course providers.
Online Educational Excellence - Research Phase
Extensive research was conducted relative to best practices and proven effective strategies for the delivery of educational content through an online accessed platform. No effort to "reinvent the wheel" was found necessary as organizations ranging from well respected universities to technical educators have developed effective online educational parameters over long periods of time. Research proven online educational standards were compiled and utilized throughout the course development process.
Driver Education Online Content Evaluation
A team of content analysts was employed to evaluate the online defensive driver and driver improvement courses available from over a dozen providers. State provided driver education manuals and online content was also analyzed. All materials from all sources were broken down into subject matter categories and further segmented by content format. Each content category was evaluated relative to regulatory requirements and research based need. Extensive development notes were compiled regarding content quality as measured by: driver safety needs, language and presentation quality, effective integration with a broad course objectives and adherence to online educational delivery best practices.
Student Engagement Challenges Defined
Recognizing that no educational platform can deliver desired results if student engagement is poor, significant efforts were put into research aimed at ensuring course content kept students focused and learning. This involved a large group of individuals taking courses from many providers. Followup efforts with students utilizing both individual surveys and group discussion formats were used to aid in evaluating the quality of both student engagement and content impact for all of the popular online driver education courses. Areas of excellence as well as those lacking in engagement effectiveness were identified and analyzed. Specific opportunities for improvement were noted and utilized in our course development program.
Keys to Success Refined
Our research and evaluation efforts enabled the definition of a set of key objectives that would be prerequisites to successful unique defensive driver / driver improvement course creation. These crucial elements included effective student engagement and needs acceptance, regulatory and insurance company compliance, and multi-format content materials that provided a solid foundation of driving safety education.
